LONDON, ENGLAND (YPPO) — It has been reported that Arsene Wenger has given warnings to Bert van Marwijk over the possibility of Robin Van Persie playing for a Netherlands friendly match against Turkey after the star Arsenal player has just returned from an ankle injury. Reportedly, Wenger stated that it would be an absolute scandal if he were to play in the match. However, Van Marwijk has stated that he fully intends to play Van Persie in the match, stating that “Robin is expected to be back in the national team next month, we expect to play him”.
Although Wenger does expect Van Persie to return to playing in three weeks, he does not think that he should play for his national team ahead of Arsenal, reports say. Wenger stated in an interview that it would be an absolute scandal if Van Persie were to play for the national team before he returns to Arsenal, as he thinks that he would not be ready.
In the interview he added “The players have to perform for their clubs first. If they are okay for their clubs, they can play for their national teams. You cannot have the reverse”.
Whether or not Van Persie will play in the Netherlands friendly against Turkey it is unclear. However, it is sure to cause a row if he does, especially considering the warnings that Wenger has already given to the Netherlands manager. We will just have to wait to find out what happens.
