Roman Polanski Free: US Not Giving Up

GSTAAD, SWITZERLAND (YPPO) – After the Swiss refusal to extradite Roman Polanski, the U.S. promised that the filmmaker is not out of trouble. And yet.

Officially, Roman Polanski is still within the scope of an international arrest warrant issued by the United States in 2005 and remains under threat of extradition. In reality, it is unlikely that the filmmaker in the future will reside in a country bound by an extradition treaty with the United States.

The Swiss court decision yesterday not to give U.S. authorities Polanski seems to have marked the end of the game of chess. Expressing his country’s disappointment after the announcement of the Swiss authorities, the US State Department spokesman has attempted to remain confident publicly by not giving up and admitting that Roman Polanski won.

“The United States believes that the rape of a child 13 years by an adult is a crime, we continue to seek justice in this matter,” said PJ Crowley to The Associated Press. We will discuss with the Department of Justice for the extradition of Polanski being arrested in a cooperative jurisdiction. ”

It will not be France. Sarkozy’s country does not extradite its nationals and in any event has not signed an extradition treaty with the United States. Lawyers for the Franco-Polish director nonetheless stated they will continue the fight for American justice to admit that their client had not received a fair treatment.
