MLB Draft Tracker 2010 Results – The MLB draft is past us, and the results are in. Bryce Harper, as many guessed, was the first overall choice in the draft. He was drafted by the Washington Nationals. Harper had played as a catcher throughout his high school career, but to the surprise of many the team announced that they will be bringing him up through the organization as an outfielder instead. This is likely because playing the position of catcher can be very damaging to the knees and legs, and shortens the career of most players who play the position. Harper is most known for his batting ability, and the switch to outfield will be one that will allow the team to focus on developing his bat.
The first round of the draft was occupied by pitching picks. 15 of the picks in the first round were spent on pitchers with promising arms. The Orioles selected Manny Machado. He has drawn a number of comparisons, most notably to Alex Rodriguez. The two players grew up in Miami, and they have similar play styles. The Royals drafted Christian Colon. Colon played at Cal State Fullerton, and is most known for his hard hitting bat.
The Indians snatched up left handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz from Old Miss. He is a hard throwing lefty who has drawn some comparison to Randy Johnson. While he does not throw the 100 MPH that we had come to expect from Johnson, he does throw hard and have a nice assortment of different pitches that will help him find his way onto a major league roster sooner, rather than later.
