Oil Spill Cap

June 4, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Oil Spill Cap – BP aims to have the containment cap covering the gushing well pipe under Gulf of Mexico to halt as much as 90 % of the stream of oil dumping in to the ocean, a senior official representing the British energy giant said on Friday.

“I would be happy to see us contain over 90 percent of this gushing disaster. I do believe that is certainly achievable using this design,” BP CEO Doug Suttles explained to the CBS “Early Show.”

“Obviously what we need to do is work straight through the following 24 hours to 2 days to improve that. But that has to be the objective. … We really want to eliminate this oil from pouring into the sea,” Suttles added.

Suttles told CNN about the containment cap: “It should certainly work.”

Suttles was the very first BP official to go over the keeping of the containment cap around the well, that has steadily been spouting oil into the Gulf since April.

Making use of robotic submarines, BP was able on Thursday to shear apart the spouting well pipe 5200 feet under the water, subsequently lowering this containment covering the jagged opening remaining on top of the disabled wellhead system in its most current effort to stop the oil stream.

“We currently have a cap properly into position,” Suttles said.

Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen labeled the project a “favourable improvement” but “mainly just a short-term and incomplete solution.”

When the containment cover is securely into position above the wellhead, the master plan will be to commence funneling at the very least most of the seeping gas and oil right into a massive hose designed to transport it out of the depths of the Gulf directly to the surface, exactly where it becomes gathered in ships and carefully taken away.
