Sinkhole In Guatemala 2010:What Is A Sinkhole? – A sinkhole that formed in Guatemala is causing quite a stir both online and in other media today. The hole, which formed as a result of Tropical Storm Agatha, a storm that brought torrential downpour to the small nation. The picture is incredibly shocking, and many have compared the image of the sink hole to an entrance into hell. While the sinkhole is only around 65 meters deep, it is impossible to see the bottom in the picture, leaving many to wonder exactly how deep the sink hole goes.
The hole appeared in the middle of Zone 2 in Guatemala city. It looks like something out of science fiction, but experts have said that the contents at the bottom of the hole are more than likely mud, water, and whatever debris fell into the sink hole when it was formed. Sink holes are formed when the ground below the surface is washed away by the large amount of rain that has occurred.
There have been a total of 115 deaths in the country since the beginning of the tropical storm. Many of the deaths are related to similar events. A large majority of the deaths were caused by landslides, which resulted from the large amount of rain that had fallen in the nation.
CNN has reported that a three story house fell into the sink hole when it first formed. The sink hole stretches across the intersection of the street, and appears to engulf a near by lot where the house supposedly stood. There is no news as to whether or not anyone was inside of the house when the giant hole opened up in the earth.
The sinkhole has drawn additional coverage from news networks since the pictures first surfaced online. The pictures are strange enough to force many to question whether or not the story was even true. It took around an hour for US news sources to confirm the existence of the sinkhole and the legitimacy of the pictures.
