The report was first posted by RescueTime, who calculated that the game on the home page had wound up costing companies 4.82 million hours of manpower, resulting in many more millions in lost money. They reported a huge loss in productivity. A number of other sites made jokes about the drop in productivity worldwide, resulting in the topic going viral, and many more small reports popping up. Rescue Time’s report became a trending topic on the social networking service Twitter, and the company likely earned a good amount of money from the report.

However, more recent reports are stating that they did not take several factors into consideration. For instance, not everyone was playing the game at work, and if they were playing the game on their own time than there is no drop in productivity from those players. They also did not take into account the amount of time that the people who were playing Pac Man during those days would have spent playing another game during their work hours. Maybe they usually play Bejeweled, or surf the Internet at work, and instead on that day decided to play Pac Man.
No doubt, at various workplaces around the world there were people who spent their work time playing the game, but the figure is probably much lower than was initially reported. Just because people spend more time on the homepage does not mean that there was that great of a drop in overall productivity, as originally reported.
