Ray McCallum And Trey Ziegler – UCLA suffered setbacks on the first day for high school basketball players to sign their letter of intent. Ben Howland, the UCLA coach and the university lost out on two different high priority prospects from Michigan. The moves were not all that surprising, as both men went to other programs to play for teams that were being coached by their fathers. Ray McCallum, who is a point guard for Detroit Country Day student, will play for his father Ray McCallum Sr. Trey Zeigler, who is a shooting guard from Mt. Pleasant will be attending Central Michigan where Ernie Zeigler, his father, is a coach for the program.
Howland was targeting both players heavily. Howland has had success in previous seasons which may make this seasons disappointments seem less important. Last year Howland was able to lure Kentwood’s senior center Josh Smith to the program. Howland was also the lead in recruiting guard Tyler Lamb from Santa Ana Mater Dei. Later this week Howland is expected to sign the high profile recruit Lazeric Jones who played with John A. Logan Junior College which is a school that is located in Illinois.
With the recent loss of two of their most highly scouted players, it appears that UCLA will have to look in other directions for new talent. One addition could be Compton Centennial guard Deonte Burton, who the team had previously shown interest in. In the most high profile letter of intent signing since players became eligible, Brandon Night, Gatorade national player of the year from Ft. Lauderdale Pine Crest recently announced that he will be attending Kentucky for his rookie college season.
