Spirit Airlines $45 Carry-on Fee – It has been a rough decade for airline companies across the world. The price to check bags onto the plane has risen considerably, most noticeably since the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Recently, Spirit Airlines Inc, a low cost local airline company that resides in Miramar, Fla., announced on Tuesday that is would begin charging customers for carry-on bags. The price of the carry-on bags will not be based on a range of different criteria, instead, the price for all carry-on bags will come to $45. While most companies choose to increase the prices of checked luggage, Spirit has gone a different route and has decided to begin imposing a tax for carry on luggage.
It has been speculated that the recent move by Spirit could potentially prompt other airlines to give it a try as well. Some may wait to see how the move turns out for Spirit. The small airline flies to the Bahamas, Central America, Latin America and the Caribbean. The airline also has one route that takes the passengers from Los Angeles to Florida once per day. The company will also reportedly be offering lower fares and bag fees for its $9 Fare Club members. Members who are a part of the Fare Club will only have to pay $20 for every carry-on bag that they bring onto the plane.
They also will not be charging for carry-on bags that are able to be stored under the seat. They will only be charging for carry-on bags that are using storage space in the overhead cabinet. The plan will go into affect on the first of August. It will be interesting to see the kind of changes that will come if this attempt at a change in the industry is successful.
