Constance McMillen Fake Prom

April 9, 2010 by · 3 Comments

Constance McMillen Fake Prom – Constance McMillen won her lawsuit against her Mississippi school for the right to bring her girlfriend to the prom. The story has made national headlines as it pertains directly to the gay rights movement that has been the focal point of several different elections and legislation votes in the last few years. While she may have won the right to attend the school prom with her girlfriend, that doesn’t mean that Constance McMillen was invited to the correct dance. Reportedly, McMillen was left out of the real prom and instead was directed to a “fake prom” by her school instead.
Constance McMillen was accompanied by her date, along with a few others (including two individuals that had learning disabilities and were also left out of the invitations for the other venue) were invited to a dance in Fulton, Mississippi. Most of her classmates, however, were off at another location where the “real prom” took place. Originally, McMillen was not going to be allowed to attend the dance. When she got the legal system involved, the school cancelled the dance. McMillen had been planning to attend the event with her date, and was planning on wearing a Tuxedo.

It is unclear why the school decided to leave her out of the prom events. The judge found that McMillen should be allowed to attend the dance with her girlfriend, but did not require that the school agree to hold the dance. The school opted to keep the dance cancelled, and instead, a separate dance that was planned by parents of the students was supposed to be held. McMillen went on to say that the two disabled students who joined them at the country club had “the time of their lives” and “didn’t have to worry about people making fun of them at their prom.”

There is a definite gap between equitable theory and practice. The skirting these parents, “straight” students, and school administrators did is unconscionable. America lived “separate but equal” a hundred years ago, and it seems some of us can’t let it go. Pointing to parents as the sponsors of the dance does not release the school from culpability of essentially getting around the court’s ruling. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck its a prom! shame on everyone who planned and attended this affront to one of America’s core ideals: equality.

Did either prom actually take place?
Mid-April just seems so early for senior proms.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this whole story is a gimmick.
    So many of them are.

I can’t understand a word you are saying. I think you just wrote this to sound smart, but whatever the case may be… You really need to get yourself a life.

    They’re cheap at wal-mart.
