Whitman Poizner California GOP Gubernatorial Debate

It appears the gloves are off for the head of the republican party in California. The Gubernatorial debate last night got rather heated when the two republicans squared off, vying for the ability to run for election in the state of California. The underdog coming into this debate was Steve Poizner. Last night, on many accounts, Poizner made a name for himself, and looked to establish himself as the more conservative of the two candidates. Poizner painted Whitman as almost a democrat masquerading as a republican, and the early polls suggest that some of the points that Poizner made during the debate could have helped his chances with the people of California.
Poizner is currently working as the state’s insurance commissioner where he has received high acclaim for the job that he has done. He declared his candidacy later than most of the individuals who did so, and immediately caught the eye of local media after announcing that he would indeed make a run at the position. Poizner has asked that the state cut all illegal immigrants from the various publicly funded services. This has landed him in hot water with many democrats, but has helped him secure a base within the republican party who feels that he may be right on this issue.
While Poizner may have been considered the underdog coming into the debate it is unclear who the favorite of this race is at this time. If Poizner can manage to position himself to rally the republican base for the remainder of their campaigns, he could very likely move from the underdog position he once held and take over the full fledged favorite. Poizner has promised that, should he be elected, he will “take California in a completely different direction.”
